‘It seems cruel to me’: Joe Biden denounces Florida’s policy on transgender children

The Democratic President of the United States strongly criticized the positions of Ron DeSantis, Republican Governor of Florida, on transgender children and LGBT + rights.

Joe Biden on Monday deemed “shameful” and “cruel” the policy pursued by Florida, whose governor Ron DeSantis is a representative of the radical right, concerning transgender children.

“My mom would say what’s happening in Florida is nothing short of shameful. What they’re doing is just terrible,” the US president said, according to an advance excerpt from an interview on the show The Daily Show.

“It’s not like a child wakes up one day and says, ‘You know what, I’ve decided to become a man or a woman'”, said Joe Biden again.

“They are human beings. They have feelings. They have emotions (…) it seems cruel to me,” said the 80-year-old Democrat, who is giving more and more signs of wanting to run again in 2024. .

A strongly criticized law

Ron DeSantis, presented as a possible contender for the Republican nomination, defends very conservative positions in terms of morals in particular.

The Florida College of Physicians has decided to ban transgender minors from accessing puberty-blocking treatments, hormone therapy and surgery.

The governor is for his part the promoter of a law strongly criticized and nicknamed “Don’t say gay” (“Do not talk about gays”), which strongly restricts or even prevents the teaching at school of subjects related to the sexual orientation and gender.
