ISW: Rusia successfully transacted on Ukrainian drone

Russia is improving its air defense systems, making it increasingly difficult to use Ukrainian drones. Citing a publication in the journal Foreign Policy, experts from the American Institute for War Studies ISW write that for this reason the Ukrainian armed forces had to largely stop the use of Turkish-made Bayraktar drones, which have already proven themselves in the war in Donbass. The Ukrainian military also fears that the Russian military may shoot down US-provided GrayEagle attack drones in the region.

However, the Ukrainian Air Force is also active in other regions, striking successfully at Russian targets, including in the Kherson region.

Ukrainian forces have used an unmanned aerial vehicle to strike at the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in Russia’s Rostov region. “Ukrainian forces have not attacked Russian infrastructure for several weeks, and this attack is likely an attempt to disrupt logistics and fuel supplies for Russian operations in eastern Ukraine,” the review said today.

Regarding the situation at the front, the Institute for Military Research reports that the Russians have taken over the village of Kiselevka and are now 15 km from Kherson, as well as two other villages in the Nikolaev region. “This means that Russian forces must increasingly defend the occupied territory from Ukrainian counterattacks,” ISW experts said.

Also, the Russians continue to advance towards Lisichansk from the south and are likely to reach the city in the next few days, but so far there is no prospect of being able to quickly take over the entire Lisichansk-Severodonetsk region.

In this area, Russian troops are trying to reach Lisichansk from the south, in which case it will not be necessary to force Seversky Donetsk to Severodonetsk, where fierce street fighting continues. Ukrainian forces control only the territory of the city’s Azot chemical plant.

The Russian military continues to try to take control of the Bakhmut-Lisichansk highway, but there are no confirmed reports of progress in this direction on June 22.

Analysts also suggest that the Russian military intends to step up the offensive in the Bakhmut area to approach Lisichansk and from another direction, cut off Ukrainian supply lines and try to take control of the entire area.
