Israeli Army Regains Control of Gaza Strip Border Fence after Hamas Incursion

The chief spokesman for the Israeli army said on Tuesday that Israel had regained control of the border fence with the Gaza Strip, which was penetrated by Hamas militants who carried out a massive incursion at the weekend, and that it was working to plant mines in the parts where the fence fell.

In statements broadcast on Israeli Army Radio, Daniel Hajari said that there had been no new infiltrations from Gaza since Monday.

In an apparent response to rumors that militants had used tunnels across the border, he said that no proof of this had been found, according to Reuters.

On Tuesday, the Israeli army advised Palestinians fleeing its air strikes on the Gaza Strip to head to Egypt.

The chief military spokesman for foreign media, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hecht, said in a press conference, “I know that the Rafah crossing (on the Gaza-Egypt border) is still open… and I advise anyone who can leave to do so,” according to what was reported by Reuters.

Then the Israeli army issued an amendment to the statement, clarifying that the border crossing between Gaza and Egypt is currently closed.

The Israeli army announced that nearly 1,500 bodies of Hamas fighters were found in Israel and around Gaza, while it continues to bomb the Strip.

Richard Hecht said, “Nearly 1,500 bodies of Hamas fighters were found in Israel and around the Gaza Strip,” adding that security forces “have somewhat regained control of the border” with Gaza.

He added, “We know that no one has entered since last night…but infiltrations could still occur.”

He confirmed that the army had “almost completed” the evacuation of all population centers in the border area.

On Saturday morning, Hamas launched a surprise operation against Israel across the border fence, which led to the killing of 900 people inside Israel, according to Agence France-Presse.

Israel responded with air and artillery bombardment on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, which has so far killed 687 people in the Strip.

About 2.3 million Palestinians live in the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by Hamas and besieged by Israel since 2007, according to Agence France-Presse.
