“Israel tracks its own corona patients by phone” | Abroad

Israeli media, including the Haaretz newspaper, report this. There are now 193 infections in the country. All cultural and recreational places close. Schools and universities too. Foreigners will no longer enter it – unless they demonstrate that they are going to be quarantined. The government will set up a special “emergency cabinet” to bring the virus to its knees.

Cyber measures are also being taken: phones from corona patients are now being monitored by the police, under the supervision of the Ministry of Justice. That measure was “too extreme,” according to a privacy watchdog, but has been pushed through by the ministry, which speaks of a state of emergency.

A senior official tells Haaretz that the police have already used geolocation techniques, over telephone networks, to track one of the corona patients. The person had returned from Italy and was not cooperating with authorities, the newspaper said.

France

Israel is not alone. France will, until further notice, close public places that are not essential to the basic necessities of life, such as cafes, shops, restaurants and cinemas. The measure will take effect at midnight. Prime Minister Édouard Philippe announced this on Saturday evening. Supermarkets, pharmacies, petrol stations and banks will remain open.

All cafes and restaurants were previously closed in Belgium and Spain.
