Moscow. April 1st. INTERFAX.RU – Tehran will give a decisive response to Israeli shelling of the Damascus area where the Iranian consulate is located, Iranian Ambassador to Syria Hossein Akbari said on Monday.
“Israel is acting in violation of international law, it will receive a tough response,” the EFE agency quotes him as saying.
According to Akbari, Israel launched a missile attack on the Iranian diplomatic mission using F-35 fighter jets.
According to the Mehr news agency, Akbari said at least five people were killed, three of whom were Iranian military attaches. According to him, two more Syrian police officers were injured. In addition, there was previously information about the death of a high-ranking military commander from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Akbari noted that the attack was aimed at his residence, as well as at a building belonging to the Iranian consulate.
For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, according to Iranian media, called the strike a “violation of international conventions.”
“We hold Israel responsible for the consequences of these actions. The international community must take a decisive position regarding such crimes,” the minister added.
The Iranian Embassy in Lebanon, in turn, indicated that “the barbaric Israeli aggression is a decisive violation of international law, diplomatic norms and the requirements of the Vienna Convention.”
Earlier, the Syrian side reported that Israel attacked the Iranian consulate building in the southwest of Damascus. One of the senior commanders of the IRGC, General Mohammad Reza Zehedi, was killed in this strike.
The Israeli side has not yet commented on the incident. Western media note that, as a rule, Israel does not comment when it is accused of striking Syria. At the same time, according to media reports, the Israeli side has been carrying out such strikes for several years. Typically, the targets are IRGC fighters, as well as fighters from the Lebanese Hezbollah group helping Damascus.
