Israel Starts Injecting Third Vaccine for Vulnerable COVID-19 Citizens

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Israel started to give the third injection of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine to groups of people vulnerable to Covid-19 on Monday (12/7).

The Israeli Ministry of Health stated that this third injection is given to people with immunosuppression, namely cancer patients and people who have had heart, lung or kidney transplants.

“There is evidence that immunosuppressed patients do not create an adequate immune response after two doses of the vaccine,” the Israeli Ministry of Health said in a statement. AFP.

The Israeli Ministry of Health also stated that they took this decision because of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases.

Israel itself is one of the countries with the fastest Covid-19 vaccination program. To date, more than 85 percent of the adult population in Israel has been fully vaccinated.

Thanks to the speed of this vaccination, Israel had experienced a drastic decrease in Covid-19 cases to less than 10 per day.

Israel has even allowed its citizens to take off their masks when doing activities, both indoors and outdoors.

However, after the Delta variant corona broke out, there was a spike in Covid-19 cases in Israel. A number of health experts in Israel stated that they found evidence that giving two doses alone is not enough to fight the new variant of the corona.

So far, Israel as a whole has reported 849 cases of Covid-19 with 6,438 deaths since the pandemic began last year.
