JAKARTA – When breaking fast, it is recommended to eat dates, following the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. No wonder, if during the holy month of Ramadan there are many dates which are sold both in supermarkets and on the roadside. The glycemic index is the rate at which carbohydrates in food can increase blood sugar levels after eating. It’s just that people with diabetes are reminded to limit themselves to consuming one to two dates per day.


Moreover, this fruit from the Arabian Peninsula is a fruit that is high in sugar content. Meanwhile, those who experience digestive disorders, it is recommended to eat dates that contain high fiber which is good for health, because it can maintain the balance of microflora in the intestine.


The fiber found in dates is soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber content can help reduce cholesterol absorption.


The insoluble fiber in dates can attract water to the stool, making it softer and more volume, so that digestive function becomes smooth. By eating three to five dates can meet 20 percent of daily fiber needs.


Dates also contain various vitamins and minerals, namely vitamin A, vitamin B complex such as vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin K, calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, selenium, magnesium, and potassium. The high potassium content in dates is good for consumption in people with high blood pressure. Dates also contain bioactive substances such as polyphenols (phenolic acids and flavonoids), and carotenoids which act as antioxidants, can increase endurance, and are good for heart health.
