According to three Reuters sources, Israel began retaliating after shells fired from Lebanon hit an Israeli military position in the city of Beersheba.
The Lebanese group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the mortar attack on Israel: “Out of solidarity with the Palestinian resistance forces, a group of several of our fighters attacked three Zionist army positions near the occupied Lebanese Shebaa farms this morning,” it says in the group’s statement.

According to Reuters, after a meeting of the Israeli Security Cabinet, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the cabinet approved decisions aimed at “destroying the military and government potential of Hamas.”
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz clarifies that Netanyahu also said: “We are entering a long and exhausting war. We were forced into war by the murderous attack by Hamas.”

He also added that “the first stage is currently being completed, during which most of the enemy forces that penetrated our territory have been destroyed.” “We have begun the formation of an offensive operation that will continue unquestioningly and without respite until the goals are achieved.
