Isabelle Ringnes Gives Her National Dress a Makeover: A New Take on Tradition

Norway’s national day is fast approaching, and soon Norwegians can enjoy unlimited amounts of wiener sausages, wash away greasy soft ice cream stains and walk on stilts until their legs fail.

On the other hand, there will be no 17 May without an ever-so-small passive aggressive comment from a woman (50) in the notorious bunad police.

– You don’t need to waste

Founder and TV profile Isabelle Ringnes (34) probably made several people put coffee down their throats when she recently shared on Instagram what she had done with her national dress.

Desire for change

Like many other Norwegians, Ringnes is a big fan of the traditional party outfit, and says that she can sit and admire all the different variations for a whole day.

– I think both bunad, national dress and party dress in general are fantastically great. There is so much handwork, thought, tradition and creativity in every single outfit, she tells Se og Hør.

Ringnes is the owner of an Icelandic national costume, as her grandmother is from Iceland, she says. Recently, she decided it was time to spice it up.

– I have had the same shirt and apron for 20 years and I wanted a change. My mother and I decided together to give our bunads some new life and energy.

It’s no secret that Ringnes is fond of the color pink, and the choice for the new bunade therefore fell on pink tones. She nevertheless stresses that she did not change her outfit bare to get it pink.

Received positive feedback

Despite the fact that the bunad police can be merciless when it comes to changes to the traditional garment, the entrepreneur says that she has received exclusively positive feedback.

– I find that most people think it must be okay to decorate their bunad a little to make it more unique and personal. There are probably some who think that I swear in church, but for now they have kept it to themselves.

Personally, Ringnes thinks that the bunads police help us get a balancing counterpoint to all the new things.

Nevertheless, she believes that it is best to be somewhere in the middle between the tradition-bound from the past and the diverse from our age.

– I think it’s great that skilled professionals are so committed to tradition and history, and are fighting for the bunad in its traditional form to live on.

– It is nice to have respect for traditions, but renewal is often good. Having said that, I’m glad the Bunad police have no sanctioning authority, otherwise I would probably be in trouble!, she says jokingly.
