Tears at the Oscars: Will Smith apologizes to audience and host

Fighting back tears, Will Smith said, “You have to protect your family.” He was referring to his role in King Richards. Art would sometimes imitate life, Smith said. Tears ran down his cheeks. After apologizing, he added that he hopes to be invited back.

Before Will Smith gave the speech, many fans and observers of the US media suspected that it could have been a staged scene. In the past, there have often been scandals and special events at the Oscars, but Will Smith should have written TV history with this show anyway. (lm)
