“Is Ubisoft’s redemption arc on the horizon? A review of upcoming games and fiscal goals”

Is Ubisoft going to start a redemption arc, or are they slipping further and further towards that abyss?

The game company Ubisoft came up more and more often last year and unfortunately it was negative. In any case, it remains too quiet around the games they develop. In addition, the only thing that came out from the company was related to poor corporate culture or game delays and cancellations. Not good!

Last week, the company published figures on the results of the fiscal year of 2023 and the goals for the fiscal year of 2024. There we see that several games will see the light of day and that is hopefully good news. How so hopefully? There’s no guarantee that Ubisoft will release good games (no company has, except maybe Rockstar), and some projects have been delayed too many times (ahem, Skull and Bones, 6 times). What games will be running at Ubisoft in the coming year? Those are:

  • Rainbow Six Mobile
  • Assassin’s Creed Mirage
  • The Division Resurgence
  • Skull and Bones
  • The Crew: Motorfest
  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
  • and “another big game” (Splinter Cell? Prince of Persia?)

What are we suddenly not hearing about? The remake of Prince of Persia, but also Beyond Good and Evil 2 seem completely absent. Ubisoft has announced that it will put more manpower on developing Assassin’s Creed games. There are now 2000 people working (20 000 work at Ubisoft) and that will be increased to 2800 in the coming years. How so? Assassin’s Creed continues to perform well and brings in money. AC: Valhalla managed to hook up 44% more players than AC: Origins and 19% more than AC: Odyssey. In addition, they earn more money per player with AC: Valhalla (perhaps because of all the expansions?). The money is badly needed because last year Ubisoft had no less than 500 million euros operating loss (that is, you spend more money than you receive). That’s not nothing! But logical in a year where hardly any games were released except Just Dance, Rocksmith and Sparks of Hope (Mario and Rabids).

Ubisoft Forward

On June 12, Ubisoft will host the annual event “Ubisoft Forward” and we will undoubtedly see more trailers and perhaps an announcement of “another big game”’. But they really need to score. Last year was bad for them and they need a new AC: Valhalla for success. Skulls and Bones is already a kind of “dead on arrival” for many, The Crew is a dying franchise, People are skeptical about Avatar, The Division Resurgence and Rainbow Six are mobile games and The Division: Heartland has not been communicated (postponed). to the next fiscal year?).

We hold our hearts, but Ubisoft needs to start hitting home runs or things will slowly get worse and worse.
