Vitamin K can make you less sick from a coronavirus infection. Doctors of the Canisius Wilhelmina Hospital in Nijmegen in the Netherlands suspect this. They discovered that corona patients who ended up in intensive care had an extremely low vitamin K level in their blood.
This vitamin is important for healthy blood vessels and lungs. Thus, a high dose could help prevent a severe course of Covid-19. This is also evident from research among 120 corona patients and a hundred healthy people.
Lungs
“The lower the vitamin K content, the more problems you seem to get if you have the coronavirus among the members,” says lung specialist Rob Jansen.
Corona causes inflammation of the lungs and can damage the elastic fibers, making breathing more difficult. In response, the body produces a special protective protein, but it does need vitamin K for that.
K1 and K2
Vitamin K is divided into K1 and K2. The first includes green leafy vegetables and some bread. Vitamin K2 is better absorbed by the body and is therefore more important. This is mainly in fermented products such as cottage cheese and certain cheeses.
