Back in 2002, when superhero movies seemed to have an interesting future, the ‘Evil Dead’ director traded in his terrifying creatures for three productions about Marvel’s favorite hero with Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and Kristen Dunst as Mary. Jane Watson, at first everything was going well until the third installment arrived and it became the great failure that did not allow the rest of the productions that were planned and therefore its characters to prosper, in fact there is one of which it was barely presented and had a great future, Sam Raimi’s plans with Gwen Stacy they were much larger than it appears and are worth mentioning.
Combining action, drama and a bit of humor were key pieces in its success, but when the third installment arrived, everything changed, his biggest mistake was presenting too many characters without giving the correct time to know their story, highlight Eddie Brock (Topher Grace), Flint Marko / Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) and Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard), the latter undoubtedly got the worst of it.
He is well known in the comics, and in fact the producers asked that he be included so that MJ would have a revaluation with her, but it was not achieved. Sam Raimi’s plans with Gwen Stacy went, for example, since she was the one who got trapped inside the taxi and convince Harry to help Peter, but instead they put MJ in and left even more empty the character that it seems was going to be in the fourth installment, which had drafts.
Although the plan was to continue with Mary Jane as Peter’s love interest until the end, Gwen had a lot of potential, she could directly or indirectly trigger a new fight between the main couple, as well as doubts of the protagonist in his superhero role, it is even mentioned that Gwen’s death could be an important part of the production, a pity that it did not exist.
