Ireland Suspends AstraZeneca Vaccine Use to Report Blood Clots | NOW

Ireland suspended the use of AstraZeneca’s corona vaccine on Sunday, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health said. The Irish Vaccine Task Force recommends that the vaccine should be discontinued for the time being due to reports of blood clots in vaccinated adults.

The direct reason for the Committee’s opinion was a report by the Norwegian Medicines Agency on four new cases of serious blood clotting in vaccinated adults.

Ireland has decided to suspend the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine as a precaution. The country did so pending further information. It has “not been concluded that there is any link” between the AstraZeneca vaccine and blood clotting, Ireland’s health chief Ronan Glynn said in a statement.

According to the latest government data, updated Wednesday, approximately 570,000 doses of corona vaccines have been administered in Ireland to date. 109,000 of those doses were manufactured by the British-Swedish manufacturer AstraZeneca.

EMA sees no link between vaccine and blood clots

According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), there is no evidence that the blood clots were caused by the corona vaccine. Also, the number of cases among vaccinated people is no greater than among the entire population, according to the regulator.

Denmark, Norway and Iceland previously decided to suspend the administration of AstraZeneca vaccines in connection with reports of thrombosis. The countries first want to make sure that there is no link between the vaccine and blood clots.

Thailand has also stopped, while India announced on Saturday that it would initiate an investigation into possible side effects. Several countries, including Canada, Australia, Belgium and South Korea, say they do not find it necessary to stop using the vaccine.
