Iranian Warship “Elburs” Enters Red Sea Amid Growing Tensions and Maritime Disruptions

The Iranian warship “Elburs” has entered the Red Sea at a time when tensions in the key maritime region are deepening, and hostilities between Israel and “Hamas” continue, Reuters reports, citing information from the Tasnim news agency.

Details of the ship’s mission were not provided, but Tasnim said Iranian warships have been engaged in open waters since 2009, performing the role of guarding sea lanes, fighting piracy and other tasks.

Since November, Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have attacked ships in the Red Sea, expressing solidarity with Hamas in its war with Israel. In response, major shipping companies are avoiding the Suez Canal, which handles about 12% of world trade, in favor of the longer and more expensive route around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope.

The warship “Elburs” entered the Red Sea through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, according to Tasnim, the exact date of which was not given. Unconfirmed reports on social media said he arrived late Saturday night.

The information from the Iranian Press TV indicates that it is an Alvand-class destroyer, part of the 34th fleet of the Iranian Navy. This ship is escorted by the support ship Bushehr and since 2015 has participated in patrols in the Gulf of Aden, the northern Indian Ocean and the Bab al Mandeb Strait.

The US Fifth Fleet said it could not confirm information about the Iranian ship’s movement or comment on unconfirmed reports indicating its movement, Reuters noted.
