Iran uses execution as tool of ‘political repression’

Amnesty International announced on Wednesday that it is investigating death sentences and death penalty cases in Iran.

The organization added in a statement on Twitter that Iran’s escalation in this regard was “further evidence” of the authorities’ use of the death penalty as a tool of “political repression”.

“Stop the Executions”

He called on the Iranian authorities to immediately rescind all death sentences and to drop charges relating to the peaceful exercise of human rights.

The organization also called on the UN Human Rights Council to take urgent action to end what it described as “systematic impunity” in Iran, noting that a “very large” number of people were killed in Iran because of their exercise of human rights.

The execution of two people

Earlier this month, Iranian media reported on the execution of two people convicted of charges including “destabilizing security” and killing border guards in Zahedan, Sistan and Baluchistan province, southeast of the country.

In addition, official media reported that the Iranian judiciary today Wednesday sentenced 3 protesters in Tehran to death on various charges, one of which was against a person whose car ran over some police officers, killing one of them, and another who stabbed a member of the police with a blade, and a third attempted to block the road and cause damage to public property.

Prisoners threatened with hanging

He further added that up to 19 of the thousands arrested in the cities of Tehran and Karaj for their participation in protests sparked by the death of young Iranian woman Mahsa Amini in police custody on September 16 face the death penalty.

He added that verdicts were handed down against those accused of “rioting” on the sidelines of the protests.

Second execution

These developments come after the first person was sentenced to death last Sunday on charges of setting fire to a government centre.

Authorities had also charged the first convict with disturbing public order, assembly and conspiracy to commit a crime against national security, according to their complaint.

While not providing details of the convict’s identity, he said the action occurred during a trial of those accused of involvement in “riots in Tehran province” in recent weeks, according to a statement from the judiciary.

2000 person

Interestingly, protests had erupted in Iran since last September, following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini three days after she was arrested by the morality police for failing to adhere to strict dress codes.

Dozens of people died on the sidelines of the protests, during which slogans were chanted against the authorities, with officials describing much of them as “riots”.

The judiciary has also directed several charges against at least two thousand detainees.

The judiciary previously announced the indictment of more than 2,000 people in connection with the protests, some of whom face charges that could carry the death penalty in Iran.
