TEHERAN – Minister of Foreign Affairs Iran said the officials United States of America (The US) last month tried to discuss the resumption of nuclear talks. But he insisted Washington must first disburse $10 billion from Tehran’s frozen funds as a sign of goodwill.

Tehran has rejected direct talks with the United States, and indirect talks about reviving 2015 nuclear agreement aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons which it discontinued in June.

“The United States used intermediaries at the United Nations last month to try to make contact,” Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian told state television. Reuters, Sunday (3/10/2021).

Iran is unable to raise tens of billions of dollars of its assets in foreign banks, mainly from oil and gas exports, because of US sanctions on its banking and energy sectors.

“America is trying to contact us through different channels (at the UN General Assembly) in New York, and I told the mediators if America’s intentions are serious then serious indications are needed by releasing at least $10 billion of blocked money,” Amirabdollahian said.

“They are not willing to give up $10 billion of Iran’s state property so we can say that America once in the last few decades really considered the interests of the Iranian nation,” he continued.

Western powers have urged Iran to return to negotiations and say time is running out as Tehran’s nuclear program expands far beyond the limits set by the deal.
