Iran does not adhere to the nuclear deal and will enrich uranium up to 60 percent | Abroad

Iranian state media report that the major nuclear facility in Natanz is getting a thousand new centrifuges for enriching uranium. Problems were found at this location at the end of last week, one day after the commissioning of new centrifuges. According to Iran, arch enemy Israel is guilty of sabotage.

Iran is not keeping to the nuclear deal with its nuclear activities. The agreement was intended to prevent Iran from producing nuclear weapons, an ambition that Iran says it does not have. For these weapons, uranium must be enriched to above 90 percent purity. Among other things, the limit of 3.67 percent was set in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.

Iran also agreed to controls from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The United Nations nuclear watchdog confirmed earlier this year that Iran was enriching uranium to 20 percent purity after the country itself announced it. This year, the agency’s inspections were limited.

The accord was honored until then US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the United States in mid-2018. The previously lifted sanctions on Iran were then restored. In response, Tehran decided to no longer adhere to the accord.

Iran continues to talk this week with China, Russia, France, the United Kingdom and Germany about the nuclear deal’s recovery. The United States is indirectly involved in the discussions through intermediaries. It looks at which US sanctions should be lifted and what Iran must do to be able to comply with the agreement again.
