iPhone Thief Reveals Criminal Modus Operandi and Repents After 8-Year Sentence

Jakarta

A homeless man managed to steal a lot iPhone to make a profit of USD 300,000 or IDR 4.6 billion. Thanks to his criminal activities, he was arrested in Minnesota last year. He is Aaron Johnson (26) who is one of the criminals in a gang of iPhone thieves. Johnson was sentenced to 94 months (nearly 8 years) for his crimes.

He has repented, Johnson also revealed modus which he used to earn that much money. According to his confession, he would usually carry out his actions in bars or clubs and target people who were drunk. Most of the victims were students.

As a first step, Johnson will offer drugs to his victims or pretend to be a rapper. Then, he pretends to ask permission to add them to platforms like Snapchat, but that’s when the action begins.

“I said, ‘Hey, your phone is locked. What’s the passcode?’ They said, ‘2-3-4-5-6’ or something. And then I just remembered it,” Johnson told the Wall Street Journal.

After logging in, he will rush to the settings app to change the phone password and Apple ID. He also disabled tracking features like Find My iPhone and added his own biometrics to Face ID. Most importantly, he got the ‘key to everything’ when he was able to access iCloud Keychain.

For reasons like these, Apple finally rolled out Stolen Device Protection (Stolen Device Protection) in iOS 17.3. This feature intentionally causes an hour-long delay before applying changes to passwords and Face ID or Touch ID when Apple products are operating in an unknown location.

Returning to Johnson’s case, after successfully gaining all this access, he will go straight to banking and cryptocurrency applications. Not to forget, he searches records and photos for sensitive information such as social security numbers.

The next day, when his victim was conscious, Johnson had managed to transfer the money via apps such as Apple Pay. After the theft, he shopped at Apple stores to buy more sophisticated devices, such as iPad Pro models, and resold them for cash.

Regarding why he revealed his evil methods, Johnson said he no longer wanted to live the life of a criminal.

“I’ve served my sentence. I just feel I have to try to be on the other side and try to help people,” he stressed.
