IOTY 2023: SBI’s Dinesh Khara honored with ‘Indian of the Year’ award in business category

New Delhi: State Bank of India (SBI) Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara was honored with the Indian of the Year award in the business category at the CNN-News18 ‘Indian of the Year’ (IOTY) awards. The 13th edition of India’s prestigious television awards was held on January 10, 2024 to recognize the extraordinary contributions of notable individuals across seven categories – Business, Entertainment, Sports, Youth Icon, Rising Sports Star, Social Change and Climate Warriors. SBI Chairman Dinesh Khara received this award from Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh.

Dinesh Khara is the chairman of the country’s largest bank, State Bank of India, since 2020. Under his leadership, SBI’s asset quality has improved and its debt is under control. SBI’s share in safe and secure retail assets has also increased.

‘98% of our transactions are happening outside the branch’
Dinesh Khara, after receiving the award, said, “Although today when it comes to the digital age, we are in a situation where almost 98% of our transactions are happening outside the branch, but still we have more than 22,000 branches across the country. The branches are there and our presence is strong. When it comes to financial literacy, we need to strengthen it as we move towards becoming a developed country.” Dinesh Khara also thanked the Narendra Modi government for its ‘practical policies’.

Khara became PO in 1984
Dinesh Khara is the chairman of the country’s largest bank, State Bank of India, since 2020. He started his career in SBI in 1984 as a probationary officer. He has worked on many important positions in public sector banks. He is a post-graduate in commerce and holds an MBA degree in Finance from the Faculty of Business Studies, Delhi University (DU).
