Introducing Heinz Tomato Ketchup Pasta Sauce: A Controversial Combination

Putting ketchup on your pasta: many Italians are probably horrified by the very idea of it. However, that does not stop the well-known brand Heinz from launching a real pasta sauce with ketchup. Something that enthusiasts are lucky with, but what exactly can you expect from it? And why does the sauce brand decide to bring this to the market?

According to Heinz itself, there is certainly a market for the combination of pasta and ketchup. The sauce giant surveyed more than 2,000 British consumers, which showed that more than half think it’s a terrible idea to add ketchup to pasta. Nearly 1 in 4 Britons had no problem with it at all. The age group between 18 and 34 years in particular seemed to be most open to it. Reason enough for Heinz to focus on that category with their offer.

Although it turns most people’s stomachs, famous cyclist Mathieu van der Poel is a fan of ketchup with pasta. A few years ago he told the program ‘About Food’ that he ate pasta with ham, cheese and a generous dash of ketchup about three hours before a match. “That’s really the best,” he said at the time.

Some people probably think it’s ridiculous, but we think it’s ridiculously good.

Caio Fontenele, director Heinz

What’s in Heinz sauce?

Of ‘Tomato Ketchup Pasta Sauce’ Van der Poel would already like it, but what can we expect from it? “It is a sauce that you can heat in a pan just like other pasta sauces. 10 percent of the product consists of ketchup. Tomato puree (84 percent), vinegar, olive oil and herbs have also been added. “Some people probably think it’s ridiculous, but we think it’s ridiculously good,” says director Caio Fontenele.

Bad news for Belgian fans, because the exclusive pasta sauce is currently only available in the United Kingdom, Heinz informed our editors when we try to get the sauce ourselves. But if you are on a city trip to London: the product will be available from October 4 for £2.50 (2.89 euros). Who knows, it might be even tastier than you think.
