A summit in Egypt on the war between Israel and Hamas has not led to a breakthrough. The hastily organized meeting took place at the initiative of the Egyptian government in Cairo. And although dozens of government leaders and ministers from around the world agreed on many things, no concrete proposals were forthcoming.

For example, there was agreement that the fighting must stop, more aid must be allowed through and the population must be protected. But there were no plans on how exactly this could be arranged.

The parties that fought the conflict, Israel and Hamas, were not there themselves. Furthermore, America, Israel’s most important ally, sent a low-level representative.

Arab leaders condemned the Israeli bombing of Gaza. Western countries once again condemned Hamas’ terror, but called on Israel to adhere to the laws of war. They also argued for much more humanitarian aid for the Palestinian population.

Don’t let it dissipate

Many other heads of state and government came to Cairo in a hurry yesterday or today. Among them were Arab leaders such as King Abdullah of Jordan and Palestinian President Abbas. He emphasized that the Palestinians will not allow themselves to be expelled from their country.

Ten terms to (better) understand the war between Israel and Hamas

Since the terrorist attack on Israel on Saturday, October 7, by the militant Palestinian movement Hamas, many terms have been used in reports about this war. What is Hamas, what is a kibbutz and what exactly about the West Bank? And what exactly is Islamic Jihad? In this article you will find a brief explanation.

Furthermore, many ministers and prime ministers from the European Union also came to Cairo: including Prime Minister Meloni (Italy), Prime Minister Sánchez (Spain) and the German Foreign Minister Baerbock.

Secretary General Guterres participated on behalf of the United Nations (UN), as well as President Michel of the European Council and foreign policy chief Borrell on behalf of the EU. Russia delegated Vice Foreign Minister Bogdanov, China its Middle East envoy Zhai Jun.

Global silence

Host Egypt advocated more humanitarian aid to Gaza, a ceasefire and the prospect of a state of their own for the Palestinians. Like other Arab countries, Egypt is against the departure of Palestinians from Gaza.

King Abdullah of Jordan condemned what he said was global silence over Israel’s bombings. He urged a balanced approach to the conflict. “The message the Arab world is hearing is that Palestinian lives are less important than Israeli lives.”

In his opening speech, Egyptian President Sisi outlined his government’s commitment: humanitarian aid to Gaza, an end to the fighting between Israel and Hamas, and the prospect of a state of their own for the Palestinians:

UN chief Guterres called for a ceasefire. “It is time to put an end to this nightmare,” he said.

European Council President Michel said that “listening to each other” was the main goal of the summit, but also that it was clear that more cooperation was needed.
