International space station: Russia examines ISS for technical defects

Russia will be testing the International Space Station for technical defects in the coming months. This is necessary if the ISS should stay in space longer than previously planned, said Yevgeny Mikrin, one of the Russian chief designers. The investigation has already started. The results should be available in summer.

The ISS has been in space for more than 20 years and is often referred to as the outpost of humanity. Actually, space travelers should only leave for the ISS by 2024, but there are plans to operate the space station for another six years, ie until 2030. The current investigations are to clarify whether this will be possible.

Hole, rust, collisions

Six space travelers currently live and work on the ISS.

Again and again there had been problems with the aging space flat share. In 2018, a small hole was docked on one Russian Soyuz capsule discovered. Recently, Russian scientists warned of potential rust spots on the space station.

Since its commissioning in 2000, the ISS has also faced multiple collisions in space. In view of the high speeds in orbit at a height of over 400 kilometers, even the impact of a piece of space debris just a few millimeters in size could have devastating consequences on the outer skin of the ISS.

The Russian space agency Roskosmos had already announced last year that it wanted to check the condition of the ISS.
