Intel’s German megachip factory – Tweakers

In March last year, the new Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger announced that the company was going to adopt a completely new strategy. Intel would no longer only produce chips for itself, but would also offer production capacity to other companies and outsource part of its production itself. It then indicated that it would build several new chip factories, including in the US and Europe.

We are now a year further and Intel has announced its expansion plans for Europe. It wants to build a ‘megafab’ in Germany, where eventually several chip factories will be built that will work on Intel’s ‘most advanced production processes’. The company also wants to build a packaging factory in Italy, set up an R&D hub in France and further invest in Poland and Spain. In a first investment round, Intel will invest 33 billion euros in these European expansions, but in the next ten years that could rise to 80 billion.
