Intel Corp. CEO Pat Gelsinger warned on Monday that it could take several years for the global semiconductor shortage to be resolved, a problem that has led to reduced machine production and its effects in other areas. , including consumer electronics, Reuters reports.
Intel is one of the last companies in the semiconductor industry to design and manufacture its own chips. Last month, the company announced it would open factories to foreign customers and build plants in the United States and Europe to counter the dominance of Asian manufacturers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.
At a virtual session of the International Exhibition of Information Technology – Computex Taipei – Pat Gelsinger explained that following the pandemic many people work or learn from home, which led to “an explosive increase in demand for semiconductors”, which put immense pressure on global supply chains.
“But while the industry has taken steps to address short-term pressures, it could take a few years for the ecosystem to address the chip deficit,” Intel chief said.
In March, Intel announced a $ 20 billion plan to expand its state-of-the-art chip production capacity by building two plants in Arizona. “We intend to expand to other locations, in the United States and Europe, to ensure a secure and sustainable supply chain for the world,” Gelsinger said.
This chip supply shortage, which affects carmakers around the world, is the result of a combination of factors. Automakers shut down factories for two months during last year’s COVID-19 pandemic and canceled chip orders. At the same time, however, the demand for chips has increased in the electronic equipment industry, as people have been forced to stay at home, which has led to increased sales of laptops and video game consoles. Now car manufacturers have to compete for chips with electronics manufacturers.
