On Saturday, trade unionists from the Independent Self-governing Trade Union (NSZZ) “Solidarity” and the management of FCA Powertrain Poland signed the agreement on the conditions of employment reduction in the factory in Bielsko.

According to the economic portal businessinsider.com.pl, the voluntary redundancy program will start next Monday, March 13. The redundancies will affect 300 people out of the current 800 employees. It is worth noting that five years ago the plant had 1,200 people.

FCA Powertrain Poland – a company from the Stellantis Group – is a manufacturer of Fiat, Peugeot, Citroen, Alfa Romeo and Opel. The company produces car engines. In 2018, 264,000 were produced in Bielsko-Biała. diesel and gasoline engines.

European Union policy

The redundancies at the Polish factory are the result of the new European Union policy and the European Commission’s regulations on combustion cars.

Recall that in February this year, the European Parliament approved new targets for reducing CO2 emissions2 produced by cars and vans. During the vote, the new reduction targets were supported by 340 MEPs, 279 were against and 21 abstained. The legislation paves the way to the goal of zero CO emissions2 from new passenger cars and vans in 2035 (the EU target of reducing CO2 produced by new passenger cars and vans by 100%. compared to 2021). Intermediate emission reduction targets for 2030 have been set at 55%. for passenger cars and 50 percent. for vans. The current incentive mechanism for zero- and low-emission vehicles will be modified to match expected sales trends.

From 2025, the European Commission will publish a report every two years in which it will assess progress towards zero-emission road traffic.
