Intel strengthens market leadership over AMD, Steam survey reveals

The competition for the processor market has gained special interest in recent years with Intel and AMD becoming more and more competitive, especially with the latter’s great growth in the market, which was due to its new AMD Ryzen processors.

Despite all the pressure that AMD managed to put on Intel, the truth is that after years of growth, the company led Lisa Su now sees Intel increase its leadership again.

Intel’s market share grows by 1.72% at the expense of AMD

A new Steam survey revealed that Intel’s market share grew by 1.72% in June, with AMD losing that same amount. This turnaround by Intel becomes especially relevant when it currently accumulates a market share of 71.47%, well above the 66.51% presented in January this year.

In the opposite direction is AMD. After the strong onslaught of the “red team”, the 30% mark market share began to threaten Intel, with the prospect that growth would not stop there. With the results of June it can be seen, however, that this growth has suffered a setback, with AMD currently having a market share of 28.53%.

INTEL vs AMD Steam

Rocked by the excellent work with the Zen 2 and now Zen 3 platforms, AMD presented itself in 2021 with a lot of potential to conquer even more ground from Intel. The causes for this slowdown in AMD are essentially related to two reasons. The first is the mass production difficulties of its processors, currently failing to meet demand and, in part, being affected by the semiconductor crisis.

On the other hand, Intel itself has taken an attacking stance, lowering the price of some of its products and offering greater competitiveness with its new 11th generation Tiger Lake 10nm SuperThin processors, which despite not being as refined as the process. 7nm from AMD, allowed Intel to remain competitive at a crucial stage for market evolution.

It is worth remembering that, although Steam is a reference platform, the results may vary, as those obtained in this survey are limited to users of the Valve platform and, in particular, to those who wished to participate in the survey itself. Still, it will be interesting to see how both companies will react to these results, at a time when another threat is arriving in the market, in the form of ARM processors from Apple and Qualcomm.
