Intel in negotiations to buy semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries

Intel is in talks to buy semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries Inc for around $ 30 billion. The talks do not appear to include GlobalFoundries directly, according to a company spokesman. GlobalFoundries is owned by the wealth fund Mubadala in the Emirates.

Could be Intel’s biggest acquisition

If an agreement is reached, it will have a turbo effect on Intel’s plans to increase production of chips for other technology companies, and it will rank as Intel’s largest acquisition ever.

The talks come while the business community all over the world is hampered by a lack of semiconductors, among other things, car manufacturers are struggling to keep production up. An agreement can help increase the production of chips in a critical phase with high demand.

Separated from AMD

Intel is one of the few companies in the semiconductor industry that both designs and manufactures its own chips. Earlier this year, Intel, which has a market value of around $ 225 billion, announced that it would invest $ 20 billion in factories in the United States to expand production capacity.

Intel’s new CEO Pat Gelsinger said in March that the company intends to open its factories to external chip designers as it competes with Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and Korean Samsung.

GlobalFoundries became its own company when the production part of the parent company Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) was spun off and sold just over a decade ago, a relationship that could trigger antitrust questions if there is any agreement with Intel.

Abu Dhabi State Company

GlobalFoundries is owned by the Abu Dhabi fund Mubadala Investment Co., a state-owned holding company affiliated with Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
