KUALA LUMPUR – Government Malaysia has expressed concern over the increasing open hostility towards Muslims. Kuala Lumpur denounced the publication of the derogatory cartoon Nabi Muhammad of French on the pretext of freedom of expression.

Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said in principle, Malaysia strongly condemns seditious rhetoric and provocative actions that seek to tarnish the good name of Islam — as witnessed by the world recently in the form of populist speeches and cartoon publications depicting the Prophet Muhammad. “Malaysia is committed to upholding freedom of speech and expression as human rights, as long as these rights are exercised with respect and responsibility so as not to violate or violate the rights of others,” he said.

“In this context, humiliating and insulting the Prophet and linking Islam with terrorism is certainly beyond the scope of these rights,” he said, as quoted from Antara. New Straits Times, Wednesday (28/10/2020).

“Such actions are provocative and disrespectful to Islam and more than two billion Muslims worldwide,” he added in a statement overnight.(Also read: Erdogan’s lewd Charlie Hebdo cover cartoon, Turkey’s reaction)

As a democratic and moderate Islamic country with a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, Hishammuddin said Malaysia continues to promote and maintain harmonious relations and peaceful coexistence.

This, he said, was carried out not only among Malaysians of different faiths, but also in the context of a diverse global community.

“Malaysia will continue to work with the international community to promote mutual respect among religions and prevent religious extremism at all levels.”
