Instagram will support 16:9 aspect ratio images

Instagram will now test a new feature that will allow you to view photos in full screen. After trying something similar once and giving up, the company is once again branching out into large 9:16 ratio photos. CEO Adam Mosseri has confirmed that 9:16 vertical photos will soon begin testing on the platform.

When will Instagram start testing 9:16 photos?

For now, it is possible to have 16:9 videos on Instagram, but not photos. Mosseri said the company plans to start treating videos and photos equally.

The current maximum for photos is a 4:5 aspect ratio when displayed. However, thinner, taller 9:16 aspect ratio photos will fill the entire screen of a smartphone as you scroll through your Instagram feed. You can post such tall photos, but only in Stories for now. Instagram will now endeavor to give you the option to choose to post a 16:9 photo.

Previously, Instagram tried something similar, but much more spectacular. The social media platform tried to turn the whole feed into a full-screen interface, which was heavily criticized, not only by photographers who didn’t like some overlays that obscured parts of the image, but also by celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian. The personalities urged Instagram to stop copying TikTok.

After these complaints, the platform canceled this interface change. However, she seems determined to offer large photos, but this time it will not be a mandatory change for all users of the platform.

As with the other features in the testing period, this one is still not part of an official update. There is no official date set for a public release yet.
