Instagram Rolls Out New DM Features and Threads Adds In-App Gestures: Meta Announces Updates for Both Apps

Instagram and Threads Getting New Features

Meta, the company behind Instagram and Threads, has announced the rollout of new features for both apps. These updates aim to enhance the messaging experience for users and provide them with more control and customization options. Let’s take a closer look at the new features:

Instagram Updates

Meta has introduced several new direct message (DM) features for Instagram users:

  • Edit Messages: Users can now edit messages up to 15 minutes after sending them, allowing for more flexibility and correction of any errors.
  • Top Message Pinning: The update also allows users to pin up to three messages to the top of their inbox, making it easier to keep essential messages within quick reach.
  • Read Receipts Control: Instagram now offers the option to disable read receipts for direct messages, giving users more privacy and control over their messaging experience.
  • Chat Theme Selection: Users can choose from new chat themes to personalize their conversations and add a touch of creativity.
  • Favorite Sticker Saving: The update allows users to save their favorite stickers for quick and easy access during conversations.

These new features were initially available to a limited group of users and are now being rolled out to Instagram users worldwide. Meta aims to help users better connect with friends and provide them with a more enjoyable messaging experience.

Threads App Gesture Updates

The Threads app, a companion to Instagram, has also received an update. The latest update introduces new gestures designed to enhance user interactions while viewing posts. Users can now swipe right to quickly like a post or swipe left to hide it. It’s important to note that these gestures are currently only applicable to the “For You” tab within the app. It remains unclear if these gestures will be expanded to other sections of the app in the future.

Additional Instagram Updates

Notably, Instagram has been experimenting with new features to improve user experience. Recently, an App Clip was tested, enabling users to experience the Reels short video platform even without the Instagram app installed. Additionally, the update to the Instagram app on iOS introduced a convenient Lock Screen widget, allowing users to access the Story Camera with a single tap.

Both the Instagram and Threads apps are available for free on the App Store. To access the latest features, ensure you have installed the most recent versions of the apps.
