Instagram declares war on unsolicited nude photos

New technology helps fight cyber flashes.

Next year will be 10 years since the direct messaging feature became available on Instagram, but this has made it easier not only to keep in touch with our friends, but also to deal with various forms of online bullying.

Among these is the sending of unsolicited nude photos, which mostly women are forced to suffer from men who are not too shy. At the moment, users can protect themselves from the phenomenon also called cyberflashing by setting their account to private or by blocking annoying chat partners, but the Zuckerbergs have now found a solution.

First, app developer Alessandro Paluzzi leaked the software tool called “Nudity Protection”, which automatically recognizes and covers nude photos attached to messages, and the recipient can choose whether or not to see them.

A The border answering your question parent company Meta has since confirmed that they are indeed working on the solution, but it is still in the early stages of development. The corporate giant has already been quick to point out that filtering, which can be freely disabled, takes place on the device, so the Zuckerbergs do not see the content of the messages, nor do they share them with third parties. The company promises more information on the solution in the coming weeks, which it compared with the “Hidden Words” feature to hide obscene words.

A non-profit organization, the Center for Countering Digital Hate his spring report pointed out, however, that the mentioned word filter is far from foolproof, in many cases it fails to even recognize common expressions in hate messages. So it’s a big question how effective the nudity protection will be and how many times it will unreasonably cover up photos taken on the beach, for example.
