Ingenuity’s Mars helicopter successfully survives its launch into space

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has pioneered the test firing of the Ingenuity helicopter, which, along with the Perseverance rover, is currently flying to Mars.

Recall that the Perseverance rover was launched to the Red Planet on July 30 this year. On board this device is a small Ingenuity helicopter, which will have a bird’s eye view of Mars.

It is reported that during the test turn-on, the specialists checked the operability of the helicopter’s electronic systems and recharged its six batteries to 35% capacity – this is the optimal level for the flight to the Red Planet. All operations took place as usual, which indicates that Ingenuity has successfully survived the launch into space. In the future, such switching on and recharging will be performed approximately every two weeks.

The Ingenuity aircraft weighs approximately 1.8 kg and is designed with two rotors approximately 1.2 meters in diameter. Upon arrival on Mars, the Perseverance rover will lower the mini-helicopter to the ground in a suitable location and travel to a safe distance. Next, NASA specialists will perform a series of Ingenuity test flights.

We add that the Perseverance rover will arrive on Mars in February next year. The rover will have to deal with, among other things, the search for traces of life.
