Infertility: Almost 15% of couples in Peru have the inability to have a child

The infertility It affects the development of each one of the people, since it can generate feelings of frustration, demoralization and hopelessness. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), It is estimated that 186 million people suffer from this condition worldwide, which is characterized by the inability to achieve pregnancy, after 12 months or more of unprotected sex.

According to Dr. Luis Ernesto Escudero, Past president of the Peruvian Fertility Society, in Peru, around 15% of couples present the inability to have children; Of these cases, 40% are attributed to male factors, another 40% to female factors, and the remaining 20% to joint circumstances.

“Although people with infertility do not have symptoms, there are risk factors that affect both sexes, such as advanced age, excessive consumption of tobacco or alcohol, eating disorders and excessive exercise,” adds the specialist.

TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT

Along these lines, Dr. Escudero points out that couples who are trying to get pregnant should go to the doctor in the following situations:

Women

If you are 35 or older and have been trying to conceive for six months without success. Also, if they have thyroid hormone disorders, either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism; polycystic ovary syndrome; uterine abnormalities; among other.

– Men

If they suffer from testicular problems, prostate problems, premature ejaculation, diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, etc.

The specialist explains that in the country there are various ways to treat infertility, either through the administration of medications, changes in lifestyle, surgery, insemination and even in vitro fertilization. “Your selection will depend on both the medical evaluation, as well as factors such as age, how long you have been trying to get pregnant and personal preferences,” he says.

Doctor Escudero indicates that all aspects related to the health of the traffickers should be communicated to the doctor. “For example, treatments for people with hypothyroidism are important, since they help correct infertility and, even more so if any of the patients were to achieve pregnancy, because it is necessary to control thyroid hormone levels and thus avoid the risk of spontaneous abortion or the poor development of the fetus ”.

The specialist ends by inviting all couples who wish to become parents not to give up, or delay the visit to the specialist, since there are various alternative solutions, but they must be applied in time to have a greater chance of success.
