Infected people without symptoms probably have as many virus particles in their nose, throat and lungs as people who do get sick from Covid-19.
This is evident from a new South Korean study published Thursday in the trade magazine JAMA Internal Medicine popped up. The results are seen as supporting the idea that asymptomatic people can also spread the virus, although the group studied is small.
The research team led by Seungjae Lee of Soonchunhyang University College of Medicine analyzed 303 people between the ages of 22 and 36, who became infected at about a religious gathering at about the same time. Of them, 193 had symptoms and 110 did not. Of those 110, 89 never developed symptoms. A small part therefore still received complaints later.
The group was tested regularly. The asymptomatic people appeared to carry the same amount of virus all the time as the people who were sick. They did test negative just a little earlier, namely after 17 days, where the sick people were only virus-free after 19.5 days.
The researchers emphasize that they only looked at the number of virus particles in a body and did not investigate to what extent the virus spread or not.
