Indonesia has 38 provinces now, this is the newest one

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Currently Indonesia has 38 provinces. The most recent area to be legalized as a province is South West Papua.

Prior to Southwest Papua, the government also inaugurated the three new provinces of Papua. Namely South Papua, Central Papua and Papua Mountains.

For Southwest Papua, the division is contained in the Law (UU) Formation of Southwest Papua Province, passed in plenary session by the People’s Representative Council (DPR) on Thursday (17/11/2022), the People’s Representative Council ( DPR).

During the meeting, Interior Minister Tito Karnavian said it was a milestone for the community.

“Today is a milestone for the community, especially for the people of the Greater Sorong area and its surroundings,” Tito said. “Certainly for Indonesia, which is overjoyed to welcome the presence of Southwest Papua Province as the 38th province of the Republic of Indonesia.”

For information, the capital of the southwestern province of Papua is Sorong City. The new province comprises six regions: Sorong City, Sorong Regency, South Sorong Regency, Raja Ampat Regency, Tabrauw Regency and Mambreamo Regency.
