New York, USA.

The indigenous designer Alberto López Gómez brought the traditional designs of the Tzotzil ethnic group to the Big Apple, from Chiapas, in a parade organized within the framework of the New York City Fashion Week.

López showed in New York, considered one of the world’s fashion centers, the wide embroidered blouses characteristic of indigenous costumes in Mexico and Central America in an event entitled “American Indian Fashion Through the Feathers 2020”. which took place in an establishment on Staten Island, in southern New York.

The 31-year-old couturier has developed the “K’uxul Pok” brand, which in the Tzotzil language translates as “Living garment”, for which he has designed not only clothing but also decorative elements for the home such as cushions and tablecloths or everyday items such as purses and t-shirts.

The Mexican, who began working the backstrap loom at age 25, has traveled to the United States not only to show his clothes at the New York event, but also to take their designs to the prestigious Harvard University (Massachusetts), where this week he participated in the Mexico Conference 2020.

López, who works with 150 women in the region, was able to celebrate its parade despite the delay in the shipment of fabrics to the United States, since their garments were detained by the US authorities in customs.

“I’m worried because in a few hours I’m going to travel to Boston, but unfortunately the fabrics are being held in the US”he said this week in an appeal on social media, in which he asked for help to speed up the administrative process.

“This event that is going to be held is very important for us as indigenous peoples, to represent Chiapas and Mexico”, added.

In addition to the Mexican, they participated in the “American Indian Fashion Through the Feathers 2020” designer Maritza Guevara Sánchez, from Peru, and Sauma Chandhry, from India.
