Indian Women Clinch Gold at Hangzhou Asian Games Cricket Against Sri Lanka

Tuesday Sep 26, 2023

Indian women make impressive debut in Hangzhou Asian Games cricket. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team became the Asian champions by defeating Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the final. At the Pinfeng Campus Cricket Field in Hangzhou, a bowler’s paradise, 18-year-old Titas Saduna was the highlight for Lanka. India scored 7–116 in the allotted 20 overs. Lanka’s reply ended at 97-8. It was Sadhu who took three wickets, conceding only six runs including a maiden in the fourth over, who shook Lanka right from the start. Sadhu took a wicket in the very first ball of the first over bowled and took the second wicket in that over. Captain Chamari Atthappathu (12) quickly returned the decisive in the game. Only Hasini Perera (25) and Nilakshi De Silva (23) tried to hold on to the Lankan line-up. With the arrival of spinners, that resistance also ended. Rajeshwari Gaekwad took two wickets. India won the toss and elected to bat in the game where captain Harmanpreet returned from ban. Smriti Mandhana (46 off 45 balls) and Jemima Rodrigues (42 off 40 balls) did well. However, when both of them returned, India collapsed. No one else could see the second digit. Harmanpreet was dismissed for two runs. Bangladesh won the bronze medal after defeating Pakistan by five wickets. Before this, in 2010 and 2014, when cricket was the event, Pakistan were the winners. Men’s cricket will start on October 3.
