India, swarms of locusts invade cities near New Delhi

NEW DELHI – The swarms are invading India, but above all the inhabited centers. It had never happened before that New Delhi witnessed an infestation. The town at the gates of the capital, Gurugram, plunged into darkness when the swarms launched themselves onto roofs, streets and buildings. The videos published on social media tell of surreal scenes and people running in the street looking for shelter. It is the worst invasion of locusts in India in recent decades.

Delhi authorities have issued a notice advising the population to be careful.

An alert has also been issued for all flights arriving or departing from Delhi. The inhabitants of Gurugram started to make a lot of noise, with pots and other objects, in an attempt to hunt them. Last year the locusts brought the countries of the Horn of Africa to their knees, devastating crops and leaving thousands of people without food. And yet the threat is not over.

According to the United Nations, the cause dates back to the cyclone of the 2018-2019 season that caused the pouring rain to fall for many weeks on the Arabian Peninsula.
