Protest in Thailand Continues, 2,500 Pedemos Take to Courtyard Street all

Initial focus protest action which began in July is calling for the removal of the Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha.

“Not only is he incompetent, he (Prayuth) also lacks legitimacy,” shouted one of the activists, Sombat Boonngamanong, over a loudspeaker behind the truck.

“Thailand did not develop because of Prayuth,” he continued.

According to the police, the demonstration was attended by around 2,500 protesters. They gather at the Democracy Monument in Bangkok.

Between the protests, they sang songs and dances mocking the government.

Protesters say Thai elections in 2019 have been rigged to ensure that Prayuth remains the Prime Minister of Thailand.

However, Prayuth rejected the allegations and said Thailand’s election results were fair.

Police said they would not use force to crack down on demonstrators and had 5,100 personnel to maintain order.

But last week, thousands of protesters were sprayed with water cannons as they headed to the Royal Palace to demand restrictions on King Maha’s powers.

Two kilometers away, thousands of royal loyalists await King Maha’s arrival where he is scheduled to attend the subway station opening ceremony.

Protesters say they will turn around as Thailand’s royal motorcade passes.

The protesters have grown stronger in calling for royal reforms, breaking an old taboo to criticize the institution.

“Some people want to take him down, but we have supported him and shown that all Thais love him,” said one of Thailand’s royal loyalists, Donnapha Kladbupha, 48.

On the other hand, the Government Palace could not be reached for comment. There has been no comment from the Thai Government since the protests began in July.

But, about two weeks ago, Raja Maha said the protesters were still loved and Thailand was a ground of compromise.
