India Drops to 93rd in the Global Corruption Perceptions Index 2023

Let us bow our heads when India is known for its corruption. According to the Corruption Perceptions Index released by Transparency International, India is ranked 93rd in the Global Corruption Perceptions Index. 180 countries are included in the Global Corruption Perceptions Index. Last year India’s position was 39th. However, in 2022 it was 85. In South India, Pakistan is ranked 133rd and Sri Lanka is ranked 115th. China ranks 76th on the list. New Zealand and Singapore have earned the reputation of being the least corrupt countries.

Denmark topped the list with 90 points. Somalia is at the bottom of the list of 180 countries with just 11 points out of 100. Venezuela, Syria and South Sudan are ranked 177th with a score of 13. Yemen is 176th with 16 points and North Korea and Nicaragua are 172nd with 17 scores. China is a country that takes strong action against corruption. In the last 10 years, more than 37 lakh officials have been punished for corruption in the country. China’s score in the list is 76.
It can be understood from the current state of India that the authorities did not intervene enough in the background where a corruption-free governance system is essential for the sustainable development of a country. The 2023 index has been prepared by assessing corruption in the public sector. For this, the opinions of experts and traders of the respective countries were sought. According to the report, spaces for civil society are shrinking in India. In addition, the report points out that the introduction of the new Telecommunications Bill poses a major threat to fundamental rights and that even in the context of elections in 2024, countries in the Asia Pacific region, including India, have not made sufficient efforts to prevent corruption.

Corruption is rampant

Like: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier said in Mann Ki Baat that corruption is like a termite and it will make the country hollow. In response to a letter sent by a woman from Uttar Pradesh expressing her desire to see India free from corruption by 2047, the Prime Minister had pointed out that if we prioritize our duties and move forward, corruption will not exist and there is no need to wait until 2047.
Many laws and investigative agencies exist to prevent corruption. However, there are many drawbacks in the way they work. Investigating agencies follow the traditional practice of investigating only when a complaint is received.

There is no doubt that corruption can be reduced if investigation agencies take covert investigation and follow-up without complaint. In that way, the political leadership must also come forward to change the laws and empower the anti-corruption agencies to act with will. But when a section of them joins in the corruption, the corruption will thrive in that shadow and protection. There needs to be a change in the attitude of the senior officials who keep silent on the corrupt officials. Inspection at officer level should be conducted at least twice a month.

In Kerala

Revenue ahead

In Kerala, for the last five consecutive years, officials of the revenue department have been at the forefront of vigilance registration cases related to corruption. A village assistant in Mannarkkad took a bribe of Rs 2,500 on the day of the Adalat. The extent of the corruption of more than one crore rupees was found in the raid conducted at his residence. When a small official can earn such a huge amount through bribery, it is also a matter of consideration how much more powerful people can earn if they choose this route.
People approach the revenue department for matters related to land. It is the property owner’s requirement to remove any encumbrances thereon. In order to solve such crises quickly, it is often seen that the door of Azhiti has to be knocked on.

Azhamiti Kettum can be turned into a myth only by the concerted action of all concerned departments. For that let’s work together and eradicate corruption with the slogan…
