Incredible number of NPCs with daily tasks

Cyberpunk 2077 will have more than 1,000 non-playable characters (NPCs) that all have their own daily lives, like developers CD project RED revealed. Fans can do more of these NPCs at the Night City Wire event see that has now been delayed to the end of the month.

The GameStar spoke to the senior designer in a new series of podcasts Miles Tost from Cyberpunk 2077 and the senior quest designer Philipp Weber. Accordingly, the developer confirmed that more than 1,000 NPCs in the game “Have a handmade routine”. In comparison there is in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Areas where NPCs just had no routine. In theory, this should allow players to get one NPC to follow when they go to a night club from work, go to a bar at the end of the day, and return home to their apartment if that’s the routine that CD project RED designed for them.

Many characters in Cyberpunk 2077 who go about their lives every day.

That happens throughout the day in Cyberpunk 2077

NPCs Doing things all day is not a new idea in game design. This is not the first time that a variety of such routines have been built into a game. In Cities: Skylines there were over a million daily schedules. Cyberpunk 2077 might do that on a much smaller scale, but it could be an important part of that Night city feels like a real city where characters live and not just a playground that only moves because of the player watching right now.

The daily routine isn’t the only way either CD project RED from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and his NPCs has learned. CD project RED has confirmed that the Cyberpunk 2077 Map gets smaller than in The Witcher 3, which means that the unplayable characters will not be distributed that way. This can also mean that player don’t have to travel that far to see a full daily schedule.

Smaller map than in The Witcher 3, but more large buildings

There are many buildings in the new game that will go up. Just because the width is missing does not mean that there is a lack of size. The buildings in Cyberpunk 2077, like the high-rise apartments, will have multiple floors that can offer multiple missions. Without seeing more gameplay, it’s unclear whether Cyberpunk 2077 NPC routines will be at this level, but it’s a possibility.

In an interview said CD project RED once that the Cyberpunk 2077 NPCs will be much more reactive than that in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. If the player turned around to look at something in the game, the NPC can react to it or change its facial expression. It may sound like a little thing, but it is the difference between feeling an emotional response to the dialogue and not.
