In the cycle of events “See you in Tukums” on August 8, paintings walked along the improvised tongue. The performance of the paintings is not new either in the world or in Latvia, but the works of Latvian old masters in “living paintings” have become for the first time.
The exhibition “On the Side of the Sun” at the Tukums Art Museum is supplemented with portraits of four old masters painted at the beginning and middle of the last century. Meanwhile, in Harmonijas Street, which for one day became an artists’ street, the works of the old masters turned into “living paintings”.
For hockey player Niklas Kalniņš, the time machine turned for half a century, and he was embodied in the self-portrait of the painter Uldis Zemzars.
Linda Ratniece, who became Anna, painted by Valdemāra Tone in 1932, said painting was a hobby, but this event made her get to know the biography of a hitherto unknown artist.
“I was very interested to read about his life as well. Read that in principle he has only painted his close people. He has not had any models from the sidelines, only a circle of relatives, friends, close people he has painted, ”said Ratniece.
Everyone had a suitable costume and hairstyle, but the task of the artists was to apply make-up to the model, which at least remotely resembled the strokes of an old master’s brush.
“I have painted portraits, but I have not tried to make make-up after the painting,” admits freelance artist Kristīne Japiņa. “Something always happens for the first time.”
The seemingly most difficult task has been given to freelance artist Iveta Liepiņa, who has to revive the self-portrait of Jēkabs Kazaks painted in 1916.
“It is very interesting, because it is quite difficult to get this color here as it is in a painting, for a living person,” says Liepiņa. “People around him smile that he is such an orange, but Kazak has painted an orange face, and so I should get one, because it will be a living painting, and it is not a copy. However, it is a bit of improvisation. ”
Each living painting also has its own frame, but unlike the originals, the spectators could see the paintings of Valdemārs Tone, Jēkabs Kazāk, Jānis Tīdemanis and Uldis Zemzars who experienced the performance only for a short time.
