In Tukums region, an attempt is made to bribe a police officer – Criminal

On Thursday, September 24, a man was offered to pay 140 euros to an official of the Tukums district of the Zemgale Region Administration (ZRP) of the State Police (VP) in order to avoid drawing up an administrative violation protocol for exceeding the permitted maximum speed. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the police.

On September 24, in Tukuk region, Džūkste parish, on the A9 road in the section Riga – Liepāja, 49 km Toyota Avensis, driven by a man born in 1979, was stopped for speeding. He was traveling at a speed of 156 km / h outside the built-up area, where the maximum speed allowed was 90 km / h.

In an attempt to avoid drawing up an administrative offense report and losing the right to drive a vehicle for exceeding the maximum permitted speed, the man offered to pay a bribe of 140 euros to the police. For this fact, criminal proceedings were initiated against the driver for offering a bribe to public officials, as well as an administrative violation protocol was drawn up for exceeding the maximum allowed speed by imposing a fine, as well as a ban on driving licenses for 6 months.

Law enforcement officers recall that according to Section 323, Paragraph one of the Criminal Law, for giving or offering a bribe, ie material value, property or other benefit, or for promising a bribe in person or through an intermediary to a public official whether or not the bribe transferred, offered or promised is intended for that public official or any other person, is punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment or temporary deprivation of liberty, or forced labor, or fine.

The police also emphasize that the notion that speeding does no harm is misleading, as speeding between 10 and 20 km / h can often be fatal not only to the driver himself but also to other road users.
