Italy’s Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara stressed today (28/3) that “in the country’s school classrooms, most students must be Italian”.
The Italian Minister of Education added that “the principles of the Constitution can be better understood if foreign students study Italian in a reinforced way – those who do not know it well – and if in schools they are taught in depth History, literature, art, Italian music, and if their parents take part in learning the Italian language and the culture of the country because, otherwise, they will live in separate communities.”
This statement follows a statement by Matteo Salvini, secretary of the League and Minister of Transport, according to which “the presence of foreign students in each school class should not exceed 20% of the total”.
From the center-left opposition, the Democratic Party emphasizes that “the position of the Minister of Education lacks logic” and that “Valditara is now acting as Salvini’s mouthpiece”. The country’s largest trade union, Cgil, considers that “these are anachronistic proposals, which do not take into account that the school is a place that unites, nor the composition of Italian society today.”
From the coalition, the Adelfia party of Italy, of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, supports the position of the Minister of Education, with the logic that “phenomena like those in the suburbs of Paris, where the culture of intolerance is incubating, must be avoided.”
