In the center of Riga, private transport entry fees could be introduced during congestion – Society and Politics – News

She explained that a low-emission zone in the historic center of the capital is planned to motivate people to switch to public transport and use more environmentally friendly vehicles, thus reducing air pollution and making the environment healthier and more pleasant to live and work in.

Similar low-emission zones have already been identified in several other European capitals, such as London, Paris and Berlin.

In the historical center of Riga, air pollution currently exceeds the norms set in Latvia and Europe, and the biggest air pollutant is cars, the number of which is growing every year in the capital, Andersone emphasized.

Activities to reduce air pollution in the historical center of Riga are planned to be gradually introduced from 2023 to 2027, but what exactly these measures will be is not yet known. This is to be decided by evaluating the data from a study that will last for the next six months, Anderson said.

As reported, the City Development Department of the Riga City Council will hold an inaugural meeting today to provide more information about the project to introduce a low-emission zone in Riga.

The low-emission zone is an urban area where a set of measures is being implemented to reduce emissions from road transport, which not only affects air quality but also has negative consequences for public health, LETA informed the department.

On November 22, an agreement was signed between the City Development Department and the auditing company PricewaterhouseCoopers on a feasibility study and development of an action plan for the implementation of a low-emission zone in Riga.

The study of the situation and the development of functional scenarios are expected to be completed by July this year, while the development and final public consultation of the traffic restructuring plan and the action plan for the introduction of a low-emission zone will take place by July 2023.
