In Sarcelles, education assistants mobilized for their working conditions

A handful of local agents joined the national movement. Educational assistants (AED) and accompanying persons for students with disabilities (AESH) went on strike this Tuesday morning in various establishments in the east of Val-d’Oise. In particular at Chantereine and Anatole-France colleges, in Sarcelles. The movement has spread, at the margin, in other secondary schools in Villiers-le-Bel and Garges-lès-Gonesse.

In total, a dozen AED and a few AESH made the picket line in the east this morning, making school life closed in the establishments concerned. National education officials deplore “degraded” working conditions, in particular because of the Covid and the proximity that their job involves with students.

“We are paid a pittance”

They require, above all, the massive hiring of precarious staff. “We want tenure for our colleagues,” says Roumana Nguyen, AESH. They can only be renewed six times, in the establishments, before being obliged to leave. There needs to be continuity and resources for the students to be properly taken care of. This is not enough the case today! “

The civil servants, considering themselves “very largely underpaid”, demand a clear increase in salary from the State. Today, some do not even reach the minimum wage. An AESH earns, for example, 950 euros net for 30 hours worked, and only 790 euros for 24 hours.

“We are paid a pittance, it is unacceptable in view of the work we are doing,” Roumana Nguyen is angry. We are asking for a living wage, quite simply. Not to be treated like less than nothing. Contacted, the academic direction did not respond to our requests.
