IN PICTURES: Frankfurt celebrates Europa League party with tens of thousands of fans: city upside down | Europa League

It was Frankfurt’s 2nd European Cup, 42 years after the UEFA Cup in 1980. The Germans have not lost a single time in Europe this season, thanks in part to their loyal fans, who traveled through Europe with tens of thousands to support their team .

In the quarterfinals against Barcelona in Camp Nou, for example, there were suddenly 30,000 German fans, of which barely 5,000 were in the visitors’ section. The rest had bought seats through Barça.

And also in the semi-finals at West Ham, the fans were happy and very much there, just like yesterday in Seville. The club had only received 10,000 tickets to the final, but 50,000 fans traveled to the Spanish city to see their team at work.

In Frankfurt itself, about 60,000 supporters watched the match in their own stadium. After the final whistle, they partied late into the night.

When the cup arrived in the city yesterday, those tens of thousands of fans were present again. Significant traffic congestion developed in the streets around the central Römerberg square and in other parts of the city as a result of the massive turnout.

Public transport stations in the area were closed, while city hall weddings were canceled in advance.

Captain Sebastian Rode, who received several stitches to his forehead after a collision early in the game, addressed the crowd at the closing balcony party. “Thank you for this great reception. It’s unbelievable. Thanks for the support throughout the season. Here’s the cup. It’s for you!”
