Awhen lovers of musicals finally finding their way to Broadway, the Civilian Hotel, opened at the end of November 2021, a few blocks from Times Square, in New York, allows them to prolong this passion for the stage.
A spectacular decoration
By appealing to the American architect David Rockwell, who has created numerous sets for musicals to success (She Loves me, Kinky Boots…), Jason Pomeranc, founder of Sixty Hotels and now Civilian, wanted to make this new establishment much more than just another design hotel: a vibrant before or after théâtral. Support also for the entertainment world strongly impacted by the pandemic, since a percentage of the profits is donated to the American Theater Wing association.
“The Civilian Hotel unites my two great passions: the show and the design. Immersing myself in Broadway history and creating a permanent tribute to theater has been a dream come true for me,” says David Rockwell. Hence these 203 rooms inspired by the theatrical world of Broadway with burgundy or petrol blue velvet sofas and draped curtains.
of mind speakeasy, the library celebrates cult performances with a rotating exhibition of more than 350 models, costumes, stage accessories… The rooftop from 27e floor, with a panoramic view of Hudson Yards, conjures up memories of the shows that were performed outdoors in the summer.
A connected hotel
This vintage atmosphere nevertheless coexists perfectly with the functional requirement of the contemporary hotel industry. Via an application, customers are thus invited to compose their own stay by choosing between three “experiences”: Basic, Inclusive and Essential.
The Basic room starts at $250 (about 220 €), but everyone is free to add various services (check-in at noon, very high-speed Internet, daily cleaning, etc.). An economic model that has proven itself in low cost air travel. Would the Civilian hotel dream of being the Chelsea Hotel of the 2020s?
