In Minsk, many thousands of protesters are demanding Lukashenko’s resignation – in the world

Many thousands of protesters took to the streets of Minsk on Sunday, demanding the resignation of the authoritarian President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko.

The opposition website “Kharty’97” reports that the number of protesters in the Belarusian capital has exceeded one hundred thousand.

The protest column has gone to the stall “Minsk-heroic city” and from there has moved on to the Independence Palace – Lukashenko’s work residence, the agency “Interfax” reports.

Protests will also take place elsewhere in Belarus on Sunday.

The human rights center “Vyasna” (“Spring”) reports that protesters have been detained in Minsk, Brest, Gomel, Grodno, Lida, Pinsk, Recica. Journalists are also among those detained.

Tear gas was used to disperse the protesters in Lida, local media reported, referring to eyewitnesses.

It has already been reported that the leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovska raised an ultimatum on October 13 – he must announce his resignation no later than October 25. If Lukashenko does not do so, “a national strike of all companies, a blockade of all roads, the collapse of trade in state stores will begin,” Tihanovska warned.

Protests against the rigging of the presidential election have continued in Belarus since 9 August. More than 13,000 people have been detained and several hundred injured during the protests. The biggest protests take place on Sundays.

According to the official results of the presidential election in Belarus on August 9, the current head of state Lukashenko won 80.1% of the vote, and the opposition candidate Tikhanovska – 10.1%, but the opposition believes that the election results are fake and Tikhanovsky won the election convincingly.

The European Union and other Western countries have also refused to recognize the election results.
